Woodward OK Area Guide

Woodward is located in northwestern Oklahoma and covers 1,252 square miles. Woodward is rated as one of top five communities for growth in Oklahoma. Woodward also enjoys one of the highest growth rates in years for population, economy, and job creation. Many construction projects are underway in Woodward, including amazing new hotels, excellent golf, and great places to eat and shop.

Woodward History

Early settlementWoodward was formed from the Cherokee Outlet in 1893. Woodward was originally known as “N” County, but citizens voted for it to be changed to Woodward in 1894. The town was established and also became the county seat. From the very beginning, Woodward was home to a shack courthouse, a few stores and a few saloons. It was a true pioneer settlement. By 1900, Woodward’s population was 7,469. By 1907, the population had almost doubled to 14,595.

It is not exactly sure how the town of Woodward received its name, but the most popular belief is that the community was named after the Woodward brothers. The Woodwards came into the Kansas area after serving in the Confederate Army. Hugh Woodward became a freighter and hauled to Fort Supply and cow camps. Hugh Woodward and a friend were out hunting buffalo in the vicinity when a blizzard hit. Woodward, dismayed with the blizzard posted a sign that read “5 miles to Hell: 25 miles to Heaven” and signed it. Thus, the community was named.

Many people helped establish Woodward and names for themselves. Temple Houston came to Woodward from Texas and established himself as an attorney. Jack Love was elected one of the first corporation commissioners for Oklahoma in 1907. Billy Bolton launched “The Livestock Bulletin” which was the very first of its kind in the southwest.
